GST/HST suggested from the route

The rate follows the delivery point, not your customer's address. We suggest it from the stops on the load, and you confirm it for each line.

Rules, not AI

The suggestion comes from fixed rules based on CRA and Revenu Québec guidance. AI doesn't decide the tax.

You confirm each line

An invoice can't be issued until the tax is chosen. You can change the suggestion or turn suggestions off.

Zero-rated shows as 0%

Cross-border moves show as zero-rated on the invoice, which isn't the same as leaving tax out.

Quebec included

A move inside Quebec gets GST and QST. A move into Quebec from another province gets GST only.

Your numbers on the invoice

Your GST/HST and QST numbers appear on the invoice. HST shows as one rate, as CRA asks.

Optional elsewhere

Hauling only in the US? Tax lines are optional, and you can invoice in USD.

Questions

Is this tax advice?

No. It's general information based on published guidance, and you're responsible for the tax on your invoices. Ask your accountant about anything unusual.

What about loads billed to a broker?

The suggestion treats the broker as your customer and applies tax by destination. A broker that takes responsibility for the move may count as a carrier, so ask your accountant how to treat yours and change the rate if needed.

What happens when rates change?

Rates are stored with the date they were last checked. An issued invoice keeps the tax it was issued with.
